The tales of Mount Kinabalu

How did the magnificent mount Kinabalu get its name? They are actually 2 different tales for it. The word Kinabalu is said to be derived from the word of Kadazan Dusun ethnic, Aki Nabalu means the revered place of the dead.
The second tales for it is that Kinabalu is actually Cina Balu means Chinese Widow. It is told that a Chinese Prince was cast away when his ship sinks in the South China Sea. He was saves by the natives from a nearby village. As he recover, he grow to fond of the people in villgage. Then he fell in love with one of the local woman there and married her. As years passed by he started to miss his home in China. So he asks his new family that he wants to return to China to meet his parents (the Emperor and Empress) and he promise his wife that he will return and take her and their children to China. Upon his return, he was greeted with a huge welcome but the Emperor and the Empress did not agree for him to bring his Borneo family to China. He was also married to Princess from a neighborhood kingdom. With a heavy heart he obeys his parents. Back in the Borneo, his wife getting anxious and decided to wait for her husband ship but since the coast is so far away, she decided to climb the highest mountain to watch the ship. She only return at nigth to attend her children. Eventualy she was too sick waiting and died on top of the mountain. the mountain spirit was touched and turned the woman to a stone and always facing South China for her husband. The people from her hometown named the mountain then Kinabalu in remembrance for her. The mountain is the symbol of the everlasting love an loyalty. It is to be said that, the St John's peak is which her body ha turned into stone.
